The Norman Robinson Stakes was first run in 1978, making it one of the younger feature races at the Caulfield Cup Carnival.
The first edition of the race was known as the Wallace Stakes and was won by Society Beau. The following year the name was changed to its current title of the Norman Robinson Stakes, however the 1989 running was registered as the Steeves Lumley Stakes.
Originating as a Listed race, the Norman Robinson Stakes gained Group 3 status in 1998. From 2000 – 2004 the event held Group 2 status but was downgraded to a Group 3 event again in 2005.
